"Max"

Max is one of our little patients at Animal Eye Doctors. He is a very cute Scottish Terrier. Max is a very busy dog and like all terriers, he has a job (which is to have fun). He especially keeps busy playing ball.

Max had a very serious eye condition called Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca, or dry eye. Max was not producing any tears!

Despite frequent application of eye drops, Max could not be kept comfortable. The dry eye caused scarring of the corneas (the clear front part of the eye), which caused a decline of vision. At one point, Max required a corneal graft to repair damage to the cornea from the dry eye.

Max was helped by performing a procedure in which a salivary duct was transplanted from the mouth to the eyelid and the constant flow of saliva keeps the eye moist! Max is now comfortable! Vision is better! He is back “on the job” playing ball.

Many thanks to Erica for capturing Max's spirit and energy through this wonderful painting.
